21 May 2013
On Friday, 24th May 2013, the Progressive Women`s Movement of South Africa (PWMSA)-Limpopo Chapter, will assemble thousands women from all walks of life in and around Seshego for picketing and a march to the Seshego Magistrate Court, when Mr. Kgatho Simon Rasebotsa will be appearing in court for allegations of 1st degree heinous bodily harm to his ex-girl friend Mokgadi Legodi. The alleged perpetrator is out bail for stepping her 16 times.
The PWMSA will lead the event in a statement to fight the continuing thousands of sexual violence across the province and also to highlight our dissatisfaction about perpetrators of sexual violence walking free and the cycle of injustice and violence being repeated on women. Furthermore, we seek to shatter this culture of impunity and we need a lasting solution.
The event seeks to influence women to support others who have experience sexual violence in their life. It`s an opportunity for women to stop and think about the issue of sexual violence in their homes and outside. Many women are trapped in abusive relationship and ashamed to seek help. It is important for women to join the PWMSA to fight against impunity, so that perpetrators of sexual violence, like Mr. Rasebotsa is punished to allow women to regain their dignity, despite what they endure. The manner in which our justice system handles cases of this nature is very much provoking and insulting women of this country. One in three women is sexually abused in her lifetime.
We feel the state has failed Mokgadi Legodi by releasing her assailant on bail. This Friday, women will converge at Molemole Leisure Park from 8:00 a.m. and they will march to Seshego Police Station where a memorandum will be presented to the Station Commander and Mr. Rasebotsa will be greeted by thousands of women picketing outside the magistrate building. We appeal to all women of color, class and age to join the PWMSA. Women are encouraged to wear their respective organizational regalia. National and provincial leadership will lead the event.
