The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) is saddened by the passing on of comrade Thozama Njobe this week. Comrade Thozama was gunned down earlier in the week in what is believed to be a politically motivated murder.
The shooting occurred few weeks after death threats were sent to comrade Thozama by an anonymous man. At the time of her untimely death, Cde Njobe was a council speaker at the Raymond Mhlaba Local municipality. The ANCWL condemns the intimidation and killing of women leaders in the country. As the ANCWL we call on the law enforcement agencies to prioritize murder cases on women and for harsher sentences to be imposed on perpetrators of violence against women and children.
We will not shy away whilst our women who are emerging leaders, continue to be defaced from this earth like meaningless objects. It is high time that women lead and take on a true course for the revolution.
We urge our communities to speak on the truth and alert those who enforce the law and not be afraid to do what is consciously right for the rest of the community as well as this country.
The ANCWL sends heartfelt condolences to the Njobe family, friends and activists atlarge. May they find solace in knowing that we are with them in this trying time.
