The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) supporters and membership across the length and breadth of South Africa and beyond wishes Cde Winnie Madikizela-Mandela well on her 81st birthday.
The former President of ANCWL, Cde Winnie selflessly dedicated her life to the liberation struggle and was not deterred by the physical and psychological tortures she endured from the apartheid machinery. She also led from the front in the struggle to dismantle evil practises of patriarchy and male chauvinism which treat women as second class citizens. Without motives of material advantage or personal gain, Cde Winnie participated in the struggle end to all forms of violence against women, children and other vulnerable groups.
The struggle launched by Cde Winnie and many of our forebears is not over. South Africans have achieved political freedom and economic freedom is still outstanding. The skewed patterns of land and economic ownership has to be changed. It is the current generation that has to ensure that it carries the baton and advance radical economic transformation.
In carrying forward the struggle torch from Cde Winnie and many other heroines of our struggle, the leadership of ANCWL, its members and supporters will continue working towards making the ANC an even more effective instrument of liberation in the hands of the people, and will defend the unity and integrity of the organisation and its principles.
The ANCWL will lead the demand for fundamental change in the structure, systems, institutions and patterns of ownership, management and control of the economy in favour of all South Africans, especially the poor, the majority of whom are African and female. Radical economic transformation is not just necessary for the eradication of inequality, unemployment and poverty but is imperative.
Happiest Birthday Cde Winnie and wishing you the best in the years to come!!!
