The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) is overwhelmed with joy by reports that Banyana Banyana has been crowned the 2017 CAF National Team of the Year at the AITEO CAF Awards 2017 held in Accra, Ghana on Thursday, 04 January 2018.
Banyana Banyana's achievement is incredible for women's football in South Africa and women's sport in general. The achievement proves that given equal opportunity women can excel in any sporting code. The ANCWL is disturbed by the fact that there is still high level of gender equalities in sports in South Africa despite progressive policies like South African White Paper on Sport and Recreation, 2012, the 2012 Transformation Charter for South African Sport and the National Sport and Recreation Amendment Act 18, 2007. The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) must take the lead and ensure that patriarchal attitudes and male chauvinism in sport is defeated.
The ANCWL demands that the African National Congress (ANC) led government and Corporate sector invest more resources in women sports development particularly at grass roots level. In addition, media houses must provide adequate coverage of female athletes. As long as there is biased funding and media coverage to men sports activities gender inequalities in sports will continue. Gender inequalities are entrenched in sports and female sports athletes are not remunerated equally like their own male counterparts and even media is not providing adequate profiling of female athletes. Women sports needs more funding and media coverage in order to be on an equal footing with their male counterparts.
ANCWL calls all its supporters, members and society in general to fight for promotion of equality, representation and redress in sport. Women and young girls must be encouraged and supported to actively participate in sports.
Once more, the ANCWL congratulates Banyana Banyana and hope that their achievement will inspire the Corporate sector and media to focus on women's sports.
Radical socio-economic transformation in our lifetime!!
