The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) supporters and membership across the length and breadth of South Africa and beyond congratulates Cde Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for being awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws during the 68th Graduation of Makerere University.
Cde Winnie remains an epitome of selfless servanthood and she is accorded the respect she deserves by those who have appreciation of her outstanding contribution to the fight against apartheid and colonialism. The political arrivalists have to be reminded that Cde Winnie dedicated her entire life to the liberation struggle and was not deterred by the physical and psychological tortures she endured from the apartheid machinery. Cde Winnie's resilience against partriarchy and male chauvinism that regards women as second class citizens motivates many women in and outside the African National Congress to continue working without motives of material advantage or personal gain, in the struggle to end to all forms of violence against women that is perpetuated by some traditional/religious practices.
Cde Winnie's generation achieved political freedom. For its own benefit and for the generation to come, the current generation of women must unite and totally dismantle and eradicate partriarchy in all sectors of the society. It is also upon the current generation to achieve radical change in the structure, systems, institutions and patterns of ownership, management and control of the economy in favour of all South Africans, especially the poor, the majority of whom are African and female.
Congratulations Cde Winnie.
