ANCWL saddened and angered by reports of rape of a woman by illegal miners

14 May 2018

The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) is saddened and angered by the reports that on the eve of mother's day, a woman in Vaal Reefs in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality was raped by about 15 illegal miners who are having a free run in that area terrorizing women.

The law enforcement agencies must be warned that patience of the community is fading away and if cases like this are not treated as a priority community might resort to taking the law into their own hands. The ANCWL calls on the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) , Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Services in North West and representatives of all Chapter 9 institutions mandated to protect human rights and ensure society free from any forms of gender oppression to convene urgently and find ways to reclaim the area from the illegal miners who are terrorising women in that area.

Mining houses that left their shafts unattended and not rehabilitated must be persued legally by the DMR. After looting the country's minerals and left the communities poor, they have created a haven for illegal activities and now the safety of women in those areas is at risk.

The ANCWL will continue working with structures and individuals in the communities to fight against gender based violences. The ANCWL calls all members of society to support the victims and also work with law enforcement agencies to find perpetrators
