ANCWL statement of the on Israel

ANCWL statement of the on Israel

15 May 2018

The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) applauds the African National Congress (ANC) led government on its swift action of withdrawing its Ambassador to Israel following Israel's deadly attack in the Gaza Strip where about 55 Palestinians including children were killed , and more than 2770 injured.

Over decades with support from the Imperialists, the Israeli settlers have been unleashing all acts of violence, intimidation and provocation against Palestinian civilians including women and children. Israel settlers have been on rampage destroying properties of Palestinians which includes homes, mosques, churches and agricultural lands. South Africa must stop having full diplomatic ties with Israel until the people of Palestine are free. First and foremost the downgrading of the Israel embassy as resolved at the ANC 54th national conference must be implemented without any further delay. Whilst the process of downgrading the embassy is unfolding, ANCWL demands that the South African government sends Israel ambassador to South Africa back to Israel before the end of this week.

The ANCWL has also noted with disappointment reports that there are some African countries that attended the ceremony of the inauguration of the US Embassy in Jerusalem. ANCWL respects the sovereignty of countries however it will not abandon its objective of co-operating with democratic organisations for the promotion of peace and development locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; and to campaign for a culture and recognition of women's rights as human rights. Freedom of Palestinian women and children is our concern.

The Israeli occupation remains a hindrance to socio-economic advancement of a Palestinian women and children. It is worrisome that some African leaders choose to ignore the facts that Palestinians women and children are living under hell caused by Israel settlers and attend inauguration of the US Embassy in Jerusalem. That act exposes deepest uncaring attitude on rights women and children by some African leaders.

The ANCWL calls on all women's structures and women parliamentarians in African countries to persuade their governments to support the people of Palestine. There is a need for united African voice against the terror that is unleashed on Palestinians particularly women and children.

Our call for freedom of women and children in the world includes also Palestinian women and children.
