The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) supporters and membership across the length and breadth of South Africa and beyond congratulates the Upington-Northern Cape born Prof Laetitia Rispel on her appointment as first African and the third woman to be the President of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA).
WFPHA is an international, nongovernmental, multi-professional and civil society organization bringing together public health professionals interested and active in safeguarding and promoting the public's health through professional exchange, collaboration, and action. Since it was founded in 1967 in Washington, D.C., WFPHA has never been led by an African and Prof Rispel has broken that glass ceiling.
Prof Rispel has extensive and wide-ranging experience of research, teaching, and health leadership in different settings. She has has published extensively on different aspects of health policy and the transformation of the South African health system. She completed her five-year term as Head (Dean) of the School of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand in January 2017.
The ANCWL congratulates the trendsetter Prof Rispel and may her success encourage all the woman across the length and breadth of our country to reach their goals despite the intensified oppression of women on the basis of their gender, race and class.
Wishing her all the best in her role as a President of WFPHA !!
