The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) has noted the sad reports alleging that the Regional Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane Dr Kgoshi Maepa has verbally abuse the Regional Treasurer of ANC in Tshwane Simphiwe Mbatha and even threatened to shoot her.
The ANCWL condemns this alleged act and threats by Dr Maepa. Whilst we take into account the principles of innocent until proven guilty, the ANCWL is resolute in supporting the victims of violence and abuse. The ANC is not immune to patriarchal attitudes and as a leader of society it must quickly deal with allegations of intimidation and verbal abuse of any woman within its ranks.
We applaud the swift decisive action taken by the Region to also refer the matter to the ANC Intergrity Committee. Internal organisational processes must take place whilst the law enforcement agencies are also dealing with the matter. Dr Maepa must face the full might of the law and the internal processes of the organization.
The ANCWL calls all its members supporters and society in general to stand together in the fight against any form of gender oppression in the country.
