Members of the ANC WL including the organisation’s Secretary General, Sisisi Tolashe, Deputy President, Nosipho Ntwanamba and Treasurer General, Hlengiwe Mkhize, enjoyed celebrating Mildred Ramakaba-Lesiea`s 79th birthday with her in Cape Town.
Comrade Mildred is a long serving veteran of the ANC Women’s league who campaigned aggressively against the oppressive pass laws during the 1950’s. Her avid campaigns often landed her in hot water with the apartheid government; she was detained several times and was banned between 1972 and 1976. After the abolition of apartheid comrade Mildred served as a member of parliament and was awarded the order of Luthuli by the president of the republic for her excellent contribution to the struggle for gender equality and a non-racial, just and democratic South Africa.
For the WL it was an honour to enjoy this special celebration with her and share in tales of difficult days gone by. Ma Mildred is a treasured asset of the ANC WL and we thank her for her contribution and wish her many more happy birthday’s to come.
